The temple is one among the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala.Its history stems from BC and have been renovated a number of times in the past. The present structure is understood to have been built over 1000 years ago during the rule of IInd Cheraman Empire from the then Mahodayapuram. The village must have been very prosperous once and the emperor had some special interest in constructing the temple where it stands now. According to tradition, the village was named by its earlier inhabitants who found this place very fertile and beautiful or it is the title bestowed by the king. It must have been inhabited well in the past and must be a centre for commerce.


The temple`s day to day affairs are managed by a Temple Advisory Committee elected from the devotees every three years.The committee functions under the guidelines issued by KUDB (Kerala Urazma Devasam Board).


The daily poojas start at 4.30 AM with the Palliyunarthal and closes along with the Athazha Pooja at 7.30 PM. Additionally there are Thirivathira Oottu every month in Thiruvathira Naal and Sankara Sheevely on every Malayalam month end. Among the main offerings Mura Abhishekam and Rudrabhishekam are famous here.



The annual temple festival (Thiruvutsavam) is usually celebrated in the month of February (Kumbham). The festival, celebrated with pomp and gaiety, accompanied by elephants, lasts for a week with various special poojas, stage programmes, fireworks, entertainments etc.
